Our winemaking philosophy mirrors the care we take with our grapevines in the vineyards. We are aiming to produce wines that clearly reflect our vineyards' unique combinations of soil and water and aspect and the particular clones of each varietal that we have planted along with each vintage's external influences and development based on that year's weather.

Each of these elements combine with the careful handling at the winery and meticulous monitoring of every stage of the fermentation and aging process to create delicious wines with personality and potential.

The next three images are the 2007 Chardonnay harvest at Napa Valley Weka Ranch vineyard picked Friday Sept 7, 2007.

4.7 tons per acre, picked at 23.5 brix.

New Zealand harvest 2007. The grapes are hand-picked into quarter ton picking bins which are then transferred to the winery for crushing.

Waipara crush. Because the grapes are hand-picked, the bunches are in great condition and very clean when they go into the crusher.

This is a picture from April 2005--our very first Chardonnay just minutes after it was pressed. Even at this early stage, it tasted delicious.

"From an early age I wanted to make wine. Spending a year in Sancerre, France, in a 19th generation, family-owned winery, inspired me to become a producer of premium wines In New Zealand. I love what I do and enjoy all aspects of the wine industry. My winemaking philosophy is that good wines come from the vineyards. It is important that you look after the vines and don't overcrop the plants. I focus on quality all the time in the winery. If you haven't got quality, you haven't got anything."
