Frog Rock Vineyard

Waipara Valley, New Zealand

Northfield Wines Napa and Waipara
The

vineyard

is named for a local landmark; a rock outcropping located a few miles from us on the road to Hanmer Hot Springs. Here’s a picture of the famous frog.

Frog Rock Vineyard

was once part of a large sheep station so the

vineyard

was developed from bare land. We have installed a post and wire trellising system that trains the

vine

foliage upwards vertically above the fruit to maximize the amount of sunlight that the

vines

can absorb, and to allow good airflow down around the fruit bunches. Rows run north to south to equalize the amount of sunlight that hits each side of the

vines

.

The

vineyard

is now 20 acres and is at full production. 2020 harvest was late March 2020. 2011 harvest was April/May 2011.

The Weka Pass railway runs close to our

vineyard

on its weekend trips through the high country to Waikari. This is a very picturesque train that attracts many visitors to the area for the beautiful scenery as well as for

wine tasting

.
